I had a fascinating conversation with a working blacksmith, and learned about two pieces of Charleston history you need to know: Philip Simmons, the legendary ironworker whose gates and balconies still decorate the historic district, and the American College of the Building Arts — the only college in the country that grants a bachelor's degree in the traditional building trades.
